We’ve always been fans of a good podcast here at Neptune. They’re perfect for whenever your hands are busy but your mind is free. They’ve become our witty, interesting and insightful companions, whether we’re cooking, gardening or cleaning around the house, and they’re an essential distraction from listening to the news. Always on the lookout for new shows to download, we thought we’d share some of our very favourites on the subject of interiors (and a few other topics) in case you’re doing just the same.
For interiors
The Great Indoors
If you’re looking for a podcast that dives into any and every aspect of interiors, this is it. Co-hosted by designer Sophie Robinson and journalist Kate Watson-Smyth (of blog Mad About the House), they cover everything from trends to advice to the psychology of our homes and how we decorate them, with a smattering of home tours and interviews thrown in too.
The AD Aesthete
If you’ve just binge-listened to ‘The Great Indoors’, then move onto this podcast from the decorative arts editor at Architectural Digest magazine, Mitch Owens. It’s similar in that its subject range is broad, although, in tune with the magazine, there’s more emphasis on the higher end of design. Featuring profiles on current and historical tastemakers, it’s a good one to listen to if you’re also interested in interiors from a professional point of view as well as a personal one.
The Modern House Podcast
This relatively new podcast may only be three shows in, but it’s already generating a bit of a buzz. Created by ‘estate agents with a difference’ The Modern House (who specialise in design-led properties), it takes the format of a sort of desert island discs for interiors. In each episode, co-founder Matt Gibberd talks to a different creative – be they a designer, an architect, a maker or an entrepreneur – about not only their own home and work, but also the three buildings they love the most.
For foodies
Stir the Pot
Winner of the first ‘Great British Bake Off’, Edd Kimber, talks to a different foodie in each hour(ish)-long episode of ‘Stir the Pot’. Conversation centres mostly around food, although occasionally veers of course, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s perfect easy listening for an afternoon in the kitchen.
For gardening
Roots, Wings and Other Things
‘Gardeners’ World’ watchers will already be familiar with designer and presenter Adam Frost and, in this podcast, he’s joined by beekeeper and nature-advocate Jez Rose – hence the show’s name. More like a casual catch up between friends than a carefully orchestrated show, and filled with all the joking that goes along with that, each monthly episode feels as if you’re sat there with them, chatting over a cup of tea in the potting shed.
For escapism
Scotland Outdoors
We’ve been enjoying getting outdoors and exploring the Scottish countryside from our homes in this weekly podcast. Created by the team behind BBC Radio Scotland’s Saturday morning ‘Out of Doors’ show, it’s a bit of a cross between ‘Countryfile’ and ‘Spring Watch’, covering all sorts from landscapes and wildlife to local history and mythology. And, as it’s largely recorded outside, there’s a great sense of you, the listener, being there too.
For dog-lovers
Dogcast with Clare Balding
We know that lots of you really do love your dogs (if the number of regular four-legged visitors to our stores is anything to go by), and so we know that you’ll love listening to this podcast just as much as we have. In each episode, Clare (joined by her own dog, Archie the Tibetan terrier) talks to dog owners and dog experts about the ways their pooches have transformed their lives, along with sharing behavioural and care advice.
